Let us suppose that we wanted to know what our friend had eaten for dinner.
We might ask our friend what they had eaten for dinner.
Or if we were at their home we might just look at the dinner table or into the kitchen for
clues. A red sauce still clinging to a plate, or the trace of a vineagrette in the bottom
of a bowl might lead us to a certain conclusion. Or
we might smell something in the air.
Or there might be leftovers packed away in the kitchen.
We can use these examples to explore my notions of firstness, secondness, and thirdness.
